The Last Nuts I'd Ever Taste

Fallen Trees and a Broken Bench

What's left of the bench.
Visual description

Two large weathered tree trunks lie broken and crossed over a wooden bench, crushing its slatted seat beneath them. The bench frame is partially visible, bolted into the ground, with its wooden slats splintered and pushed apart. Green grass and fallen leaves surround the scene.

Just imagine this. It seemed like a perfect place to take a break, so I sat down on a wooden bench, towering trees above casting cool shadows around me. I reached into my backpack, pulled out the nuts I'd packed, ready for a quick snack.

As I sat there, unaware, the woods around me were about to change. A tree, weakened over time, finally gave in and began to fall, a sound I would never hear. I kept eating, completely unaware of the chaos unfolding right in front of me. I didn't hear the destruction, didn't flinch, didn't panic. My world stayed quiet, still, and calm.

The tree had come down suddenly, its crushing weight capable of ending me without my ever knowing. The last thing I'd taste would be the nuts I savored in the beautiful woods I had so thoroughly enjoyed.

Life, much like the woods, is unpredictable.
