Wave Study

Visual description

A large ocean wave curls into a cresting peak against a pale blue sky. White foam breaks along the top edge and spills down the face of the wave. The water shifts from deep blue-green in the shadow areas to soft gray-blue where it catches the light. Brushstrokes are visible throughout, giving the water surface a sense of motion.

This wave study was practice for a future project. The next piece won't be about waves at all. I wanted to work on brushwork, especially with acrylic since it dries so fast and doesn't give you much time to think.

I liked how it turned out. Signed it and called it done.

I was looking forward to carrying these same colors and this same style into the next piece.

Update (10/1/2025): My son sold this painting. I didn't see it coming. I'd wanted to keep this one around, not for the wall, but as something to look back on while I worked on other pieces. It's gone now. Maybe I'll paint another wave study someday.
