Homestyle Country Fried Steak

Visual description

A black skillet sits on a stovetop filled with hot bubbling oil. Several small pieces of country fried steak are frying in the pan. Each piece has an uneven, golden-brown crust made from crushed Ritz crackers. The oil bubbles vigorously around the edges as the coating crisps and darkens. The steaks vary slightly in color, with some already deep golden and others still pale as they cook. The skillet nearly fills the frame, with the stovetop visible around the edges.

My mom cooked country fried steak while I was growing up. She usually seasoned it with salt and pepper. Later, Jolynn cooked it the same way using crushed Ritz crackers for the coating. It has always been one of my favorite meals.

We do not usually add salt or pepper when we cook it. The crackers and gravy bring enough flavor for us.

The steak is served with mashed potatoes and white gravy. The gravy spreads across everything on the plate. The potatoes soak it up, and the crispy steak sits right on top.

For me, it is a real home meal... simple and filling.

This version uses crushed Ritz crackers for the coating. They fry up golden and give the steak a rich, buttery crust.

Country Fried Steak (Ritz Cracker Version)

Ingredients

  • cube steak
  • 1 sleeve Ritz crackers, crushed
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

  2. Crush the Ritz crackers into small crumbs and place them in a shallow bowl.
  3. Add the flour to another shallow bowl.
  4. In another bowl, beat the egg with the water.
  5. Press the cube steak into the flour so both sides are well coated.
  6. Dip the floured steak into the egg mixture.
  7. Press the steak into the crushed crackers so both sides are well coated.
  8. Heat a Crisco butter-flavored stick in a skillet over medium heat.
  9. Place the coated steaks into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  10. Remove and let them rest briefly before serving.
